I stumbled into your site looking for a solution to errors I'm getting in Eclipse in regard to Java generics. It appears the problem you had with generics/Eclipse is different than the one I'm having. But no problem, because I listened to a couple of your tunes and that made it worth the trip. Very nice stuff. -Buzz

Right. I think the biggest learning experience from that is that you can't second guess the Eclipse Java contracts - you have to implement them exactly as specified. And even then you end up making faulty assumptions about the order things are called in. It's a great platform, but you pay for it in complexity.

Yeah I remember the headaches with eclipse plugin's myself when we started out on it. It was one of things that is very powerful if you just knew how to use it properly, because there was just so little documentation about it at the time. Long live the web and code snippets or else we would never have had the first version :)

No problem; I tore my hair out because it was one of those things that happens gradually (as the dust builds up.) Coupled with the fact that it's not apparent (bus speeds don't change), it's hard to find. Tip: that thermal paste gets everywhere!

Wow, I might have to do the same thing, my PC is chugging these days (roughly same age, same spec).

Cheers for the tip.

John - glad to see you're still working new things into your Web site. I still pop over every once in a while to see what new music bites are available... Keep up the great work! (We talked a bit back in 2004 - www.musicshoppe.com)

Exactly, and they can be very useful if you're doing Object.Wait()/.Notify() semaphores (which bring their own special class of problems). Debugging them ranges from impossible (if they're suspected) to hard (if you have a stack trace of one actually happening). At least in the newer JVMs the deadlock detector will actually point out the participants in a deadlock right there in the trace.

Very good and very true. I know about this stuff but its just amazing how often you forget it when coding and then have the dreaded task of debugging the application to see what's going wrong. Think about it early and it will save headaches later.

Synchronization is one of those things that when it works is absolutely amazing but, you have a greater chance of something going tits up when you are not experienced. Long live Erlang :)
